PREFACE BY CONGRESS WOMAN VALENTINA APREA

CONGRESS WOMAN VALENTINA APREA

Regional Assessor for Culture

I’m very proud to present the artwork of Roberto De Wan. This exhibition is a part of the prestigious project “The Artistic Work and the Production” of the Lombardy Region. This collection, which is entitled, “Expression of a Painter-Manager”, comprehensively explains the artist’s cultural and social world; the environment within which the painter is recognized and appreciated, allowing to better understand the polyhedral genius of Roberto De Wan. For almost a century, the De Wan brand has been a symbol of elegance and innovation in global fashion. Roberto De Wan, recognized for his work in art and fashion design, offers original concepts, freeform shapes and innovative techniques. In the worlds of fashion and art, his works are admired and valued for their interpretation of a cultural and emotional universe, allowing his life to become interweaved with his art.

THE STYLE OF ROBERTO DE WAN. A PICTORAL DISCOVERY

by Rolando Bellini
Professor of Contemporary Art Brera Academy, Milan

I had a special and promising meeting with Roberto De Wan. It was during the evening of Ferragosto day (15th August, 2017), when the almost empty city of Milan looked like a metaphysical picture by Giorgio De Chirico. This meeting took place at the beautiful “De Wan” store in 44 Manzoni st, full of amazing bags and jewelry. I was curious: why does a well-known Fashion-manager want to get into the world of painting art?

He told me that he had always been interested in painting, utilizing precious fabrics, oils and pastels in a very unique way. Roberto De Wan associates art with freedom without the constraints of the Design industry. Nevertheless, his autobiographical paintings are influenced by the Fashion world. De Wan is looking for the connection between Viennese Secession and Berliner Bauhaus. This is something that just a few artists have tried. De Wan paintings are secretly Apollonian and obviously Dionysian. But his principal theme is always the colour which confirms his awareness of himself with a fast and elegant execution. Bataille and Foucault used to say that Edouard Manet favored technique over substance in his artwork and Roberto De Wan applies that same principle within his own artistic expression. Proudly independent, he’s focused on the theme of existentialism expressed in an original and unique way.

“Sometime we’ve hoped in a quieter spring and sunny autumn. Art means to become of everything in the best way, in more or less long future. The mysterious means depends from it. That’s why the artist needs to transmit his own personal experience. Whatever it is his own expressive medium “to colour” his life and what of everybody”.
